YMCA of Greensboro Awarded $750,000 Grant from Phillips Foundation

GREENSBORO, N.C. (August 23, 2013) — Phillips Foundation recently contributed a $750,000 grant to the YMCA of Greensboro for the construction of the new Hayes- Taylor YMCA at Barber Park.

“Phillips Foundation is glad to contribute the funds for a Children’s Learning Center at the new Hayes-Taylor YMCA. This project is important to southeast Greensboro, and we hope our grant can provide momentum to complete the campaign goals,” said Elizabeth Phillips, executive director, Phillips Foundation.

Because of this gift and the support of other donors, the capital campaign has only $1.4 million left to raise on the $11.1 million goal set in 2012 to break ground on the new Y this year.

The current Hayes-Taylor Y, located next to NC A&T State University, has served southeast Greensboro for almost 75 years. Recently, the building was sold to NC A&T State University — providing seed money to build the new Y in southeast Greensboro.

The city provided land at Barber Park to build a new Y so citizens can benefit from shared facilities and expanded services. The new Y will more than double the number of people that can be served, reduce maintenance costs and increase sustainability. Our community has already invested millions in this fast-growing area through Gateway University Research Park, Gateway Gardens and Barber Park.
