What does the Phillips Foundation do?

Phillips Foundation is a private family foundation and catalytic capital platform that leverages its assets to maximize social, environmental and financial value. We achieve our mission through Generational Grants, Original Programs and Impact Investing.

How did the Phillips Foundation get started?

Founded as the Kermit G. Phillips Charitable Trust in 2002, Mr. Phillips endowed the Foundation upon the settlement of his estate in 2013. A successful real estate entrepreneur and businessman from Greensboro, North Carolina, Mr. Phillips supported many charitable causes during his lifetime and entrusted the stewardship of this legacy to his direct descendants, who comprise the Foundation’s Board of Trustees.

What are some of the Phillips Foundation’s key initiatives?

The Foundation leverages its assets for good through Generational Grants, Original Programs and Impact Investing. Its portfolio of Original Programs include the Impact Investing Think Tank™, Healthy Relationships Initiative™ and Give As We Grow®. Phillips Foundation offers an Impact Fellows program to qualified MBA and MPA students. It also seeks to build the space of impact investing through modeling a Total Portfolio Activation approach with endowment funds across asset classes.

What is Generational Grantmaking?

Generational Grantmaking is traditional grantmaking with a long-term mindset. Rather than a grant cycle that is biannual, annual or over a period of a few years, Phillips Foundation seeks once-in-a-generation grant opportunities that provide a lifetime of momentum to community efforts. These grants are lead donations between $500,000 and $5 million and require sustainability models, including public-private partnership, to be eligible for application. The current Trustees selected a slate of 12 grantees in Guilford, North Carolina. The next generation of Trustees will implement the next grant cycle as they identify the opportunities and challenges of their time.

What is impact investing?

Impact investing seeks social and environmental benefit alongside a financial return. In the private foundation context, impact investing vehicles include Program-Related Investments (PRIs) and Mission-Related Investments (MRIs). Our Impact Investing Think Tank™ provides an up-to-date overview of this growing field as well as a comprehensive Glossary of Terms.

How may I apply to work with the Phillips Foundation?
