GREENSBORO, N.C. (May 19, 2016) — Phillips Foundation today will convene philanthropists, foundations and social investors from across the nation for its first Impact Investing Think Tank at HQ Greensboro. Participants will explore how to amplify their philanthropic efforts using impact investing models, share best practices, and learn about opportunities in the field.
Impact Investing Think Tank will address specific topics related to the rapidly growing field of impact investing and its critical role in unleashing the potential of the full range of a foundation’s assets to meet its mission. Impact investing refers to investments made into companies, organizations and funds with the intention to generate a measurable, beneficial social and/or environmental impact alongside a financial return. Guest speakers at the conference will highlight emerging opportunities to catalyze positive change through impact investment vehicles, such as Pay for Success (PFS) contracts, program-related investments (PRIs), mission-related investments (MRIs) and social ventures.
The conference’s keynote speaker is Dr. Lester M. Salamon, a leading global expert on the nonprofit sector, philanthropy and the tools of government. Salamon, a Johns Hopkins University Senior Research Professor and Director of the Center for Civil Society Studies, is author of Leverage For Good and editor of New Frontiers of Philanthropy. Other speakers will include leaders from the Mary Reynolds Babcock Foundation and The Duke Endowment. In addition, an Impact Investing workshop will be led by Mission Investors Exchange, the largest national network of foundations and mission investing organizations.
“Phillips Foundation is excited to spearhead this first-of-its-kind event for Greensboro and the surrounding area,” said Elizabeth Phillips, executive director of Phillips Foundation. “As a local family foundation committed to having our full portfolio of North Carolina grants and global financial investments aligned with our values, we believe it is important to convene philanthropic leaders to share impact investing knowledge, new opportunities, and best practices in this quickly expanding field.”
